Deregistering kindle will I lose all current books?

Deregistering kindle2?
My ex bought me a kindle for my birthday and had it connected to his amazon account so he could pay for all my books, we have split up so I need to change it over to my account. Will this delete all my books? I have over 100 books on it and don’t want to lose them. Help? Thanks, Olivia

I suggest you to backup all the Kindle books from the Kindle device to your computer first. Refer to the section “Transferring Files via USB” in the official page here for details:

If you deregister and register your Kindle with a new account, the Kindle will only show books associated with your new account.

There is a trick here. If you disconnect the Kindle from wireless, and then put your backup books from the computer back to the Kindle, you should be able to read the old books on the device. However, when you connect the Kindle to the Whispernet wireless, I guess they will remove those books, because The Books don’t belong to your Amazon account. The is not a perfect solution, but a feasible one…
